Now:
Making music with Acid recently came up briefly in conversation with a coworker, and it was agreed that it’s easy to rest on the looping mechanism to do all the work of making a song.

I said that it’s not really the fault of the software, Sonic Foundry (now Sony) made something amazing in Acid. It’s really a testament to their intuitive interface design that music creation suddenly became easy enough for all sorts of people to try it. This of course allows people to dabble who have little or no musical background. I’m guilty of being one of those people, yet that hasn’t prevented me from having a ton of fun with Acid and producing a few pieces I’m pretty happy with.
Later on I learned a bit more about chopping up loops to create different progressions from a limited palette of sounds, and a little of that is evident here but there’s still plenty to be desired in the area of building a song structure.
