Industrial design 3d Widget Autospork 350

Now:

Somebody once told me that this looks clearly like a glue gun. The amusing thing is that I think the person who told me that was interviewing me for a job, something with CAD and 3d visualization of industrial design pieces.

Of course that person was right; at the time I think I denied it but now a glue gun is all I see when I look at this piece. Too bad this and the Power animation test were essentially all I had to show at the time of that interview. If only I had some idea at the time of what I was doing, maybe I could have started down a career path in 3d modeling and animation. Instead now I program and at some point I hope to be designing games.

Then:

The Widget Autospork 350 is a fictional product manufactured by a fictional company. Originally I envisioned an entire line of Widget products, each boasting at least one ridiculous design aspect. In this case, the product is supposedly a dinner utensil with motorized action powered by a rechargeable battery. The advertising tagline is, “350 RPM’s of reciprocating, salad-sporking action!” How could a consumer not want to buy it?

Created in Discreet 3D Studio Max, this project was one of my first attempts at introducing more realism to my design work. There are still flaws, but it’s a relatively simple piece and I’m very happy with the way the lighting and shadows give it weight and make it look like you could reach out and grab it.
