Female Face Drawing
Now:
I remember this as one of the early drawings where I made use of reference. Drawing from a reference photo (probably a magazine) was a new thing for me at the time; it felt like it had to be cheating somehow. Nevertheless I had trouble getting proportions correct, and obviously the hair was a disaster. Then there was my inexplicable choice of presentation; it probably seemed like a good idea at the time to use some Photo-Paint effects.
I do feel that this piece works to show my skills progression, compared to others before and after it in my timeline.
Then:
Drawing, long before computer graphics, was a fond hobby of mine. Well, not too long before computer graphics, I did have a little graphics tablet for our Franklin (Apple II clone) and I remember spending long hours trying to make little images with white, black, blue, orange, green, and purple pixels. Since college I’ve tried to draw people, particularly faces, and that seems to be my favorite subject matter. My ability to draw straight from mental imagery is usually abysmal, but having some reference pictures or photos around seems to help quite a bit.
This was just a pencil drawing in the beginning, but I decided to scan it on the scanner that was available at school and right after that I had to do something to it on my computer. Resisting the urge to use lots of distorting techniques, I converted it to a quadtone to give it that rich color and worked in a simple backdrop.
This drawing was done on April 11, 1998.
