Delilah: Contemporary Elf Chick Drawing
Now:
Drawing Delilah (no, not Running Delilah, though that may have been where I got the name) was fun. At this stage in my artistic development I was starting to do a few things right, like drawing from photo reference for a (meta)human figure, and drawing at a larger size (higher resolution) than the final version shown here.
Of course there are plenty of things I still didn’t get yet, but I’ll leave the flaws for you to discover on your own this time.
Then:
People, particularly faces, are often my favorite subject matter. I was bored of drawing completely mundane people, so this time around I created Delilah. She could be a contemporary Elf girl… maybe by around 2060 we will all get to meet people like her.
Sketching Delilah was a lot of fun, I had a nice reference (for everything but the ear) and tried to mix a bit of painting with my pencil technique for parts of this image. Being able to sketch in full screen on my 19″ monitor with Corel Photo-Paint 10 and my Intuos is amazing, and infinitely forgiving as well. I’m sure my painting technique needs work, but I am very happy with the realism I can get from my custom pencil tools. Though overall my most important task is probably to practice drawing more regularly so that I don’t rely on reference so heavily and can sketch from my imagination with more ease (which would be especially useful when doing production design sketches for my 3D animation projects).
